October newsletter
Welcome Fall!!!
I'm shamelessly kicking my heels up in glee for the cooler temps, no oppressive humidity, reduced biting insects, and all the crisp, airy, changeable qualities of the autumn season. Throw in the autumnal color palette and maybe a few natural pumpkin tasting foods, and I'm good to go until there's enough snow on the ground to snowshoe or x-c ski. Oh, I know, I know. There are many people who are not feeling the autumnal vibe and wishing for longer summer-like weather. Given our location in the northern hemisphere, and even our micro-climates in Western NY, we experience a wide range of seasonal qualities, and if you've been in the area long enough, you fully know the adage: "If you don't like the weather, just wait a few minutes." And folks around here will swear there have been days where all 4 seasons were experienced within 24 hours.
Our yoga and mindful practices can help us weather not only the changing qualities of the seasons but also the changing qualities of life. Bodies benefit from the strength and flexibility inducing qualities of yoga movement while our nervous system and mind benefit from the calm, introspective awareness fostered by patterns of breathwork, mindful focus, and quiet contemplation. We weather the changing weather and the changes in life by building our capacity to be resilient, both in times of predictable calm and in times of unplanned change or emergency. Being resilient doesn't mean that we avoid the unpleasant or things that don't make us happy, but rather, resilience helps us embrace all that is as predictable as is unpredictable. We're learning that meditation and mindful practices can enhance our brain's neuroplasticity, forming new connections and patterns of thinking and responding to help us remain calm during stressful situations. Conditioning our physical bodies through mindful movement like yoga contributes toward maintaining homeostasis during times of increased stresses that can impact our vital organs and bodily functions. If you don't have a personal yoga or mindful practice outside of attending group classes, I'd strongly encourage you to set aside even just 15 minutes a day for movement, mindfulness, and meditation. Try committing to a home practice every day for a week and I'll bet you'll start to experience those benefits that we so desire. If you'd like some help in mapping out a 10-15-20 minute session that you can do in your home, I'm happy to help you put that together - just let me know!
I've changed the Tuesday, 7 pm schedule back to alternating weeks of Yin Yoga and Hatha Yoga with a Chair - both on Zoom. I've had many requests to add a Hatha Yoga with a Chair option back to the schedule and right now, alternating Tuesdays is where it can fit on my weekly/monthly calendar. If you've never practiced with a chair as a terrific yoga prop - please give it a try. If you think that Hatha Yoga with a Chair is "less than" kind of yoga - think again! A chair is a super prop to use to support stability and balance and to hold poses for lengths of time to allow you to tap into some additional strengthening elements. Hatha Yoga with a Chair offers all the same benefits as a mat-based session - actually, I feel the benefits are even greater! Let me know if you have any questions about any of my classes and you can always check my website for additional info: www.YogaWellnessKimberly.com
Thank you for the opportunity to practice, teach, and learn right alongside you. Through my role as a yoga teacher, my students enlighten me in myriad ways and shower me with untold blessings. Thank you, dear ones, for every opportunity to share space and time with you. I welcome new students at any time on Zoom and in-studio. Feel free to invite a friend to a studio or Zoom class - their first class with me is always as my guest.
Well wishes, everyone!
